How to create natural looking blonde highlights

blonde hairIt is a huge hassle coloring your hair and when it comes to getting blonde highlights, you might need a lot of patience and maybe some anger management. Many of us who like to color our hair at home (since the salon prices are sky high), experience annoying results such as blonde streaks that do not appear, appear orange or just do not appear natural.

It is important to know that sprays that allow the hair to ‘turn’ blonde, do not have any natural-miracle-cheap trick going on. They simply contain bleach, which by the way, is bad for your hair. If you want, you can go for it, but I wouldn’t recommend it because it will just leave your hair too light and damaged—you will just end up cutting them and spending more cha-ching.

If you want to professionally dye your hair at home, on a low budget, here is a quick way to do it. This method works for darker shades of brown as well:

Equipment and preparation

The most important tool you will need is a good hair dye. Try the L’OREAL Frost and Design as it is one of the best hair color products that works on dark hair as well, giving a natural blonde color–not orange, brown or red.

The next important tool you will need is a hair cap for streaks. If your hair dye kit did not come with one, go to a local store to get it as it is an excellent way to precisely color your hair, evenly, so that the vexing and overly-prominent thick strands of blonde do not happen. Moreover, it also makes streaking much easier, even for long hair.

Make sure your hair is fully straightened before you wear your hair cap so that your hair can be easily pulled through the holes in the cap. Also make sure you properly comb your hair to prevent irritating knots. For long and/or curly hair types, putting some baby powder before placing the cap can let the hair slide through the holes much easily.

One last thing, wear an old shirt and go through the instructions on the hair dye kit beforehand.

Application Tips

Depending on how thick you want your natural blonde strands to be, pull as much hair as you want through the holes of the cap. Make sure you pull out enough hair through the holes so that the color actually ‘appears’. If you want visible streaks all over your hair, pull your hair through alternate holes or all the holes. Just make sure you do it evenly—but do not worry about it too much, a little mistakes here and there won’t hurt.

If you normally part your hair while styling, part your hair before placing the cap.

Make sure you put on the cap properly and tightly so that your hair is completely tucked in it.

You do not have to use your finger to pull the hair. The set comes with a hook which allows you to pull out stands easily but don’t worry too much about the evenness as it will make it look more natural.

Start pulling the hair from the top of your hair and evenly work towards the bottom—you might need some help from a friend or anyone in your family.

Prepare the hair color mixture and make sure you follow the instructions given on the box properly.

Make sure you saturate the strands completely and adequately to ensure that they are properly colored from root to tip.

Sit back, relax and wait for the suggested time mentioned on the box. Check one strand once in 10 minutes to check if it is the right color or if it needs more time.

Once the required color is apparent, remove the cap and wash your hair properly with the shampoo and conditioner from the hair dye set.

The strands may look too bright or too prominent after washing. This is only because you are new to them and not used to seeing bright/light colors on your hair. Wait for a while and you will notice that the highlights blend as your hair dries. Be patient!
